Prof. Helge Braun 

President of the University of Lübeck 

 

Prof. Dr. Helge Braun is President of Universität zu Lübeck (since April 2025), leading institutional strategy across research, teaching, and external relations. With medical training and broad political leadership experience, he seeks to amplify the university’s scientific profile, boost funding, enhance study offerings, and strengthen international and regional impact.

Prof. Qutayba Hamid

President of the University of Sharjah

 

Prof. Qutayba Hamid is Vice Chancellor for Medical & Health Sciences and Dean of the College of Medicine at University of Sharjah. An international leader in respiratory medicine, his research focuses on asthma, COPD, airway remodelling, allergic inflammation, and developing novel therapies. He has published extensively and received numerous global honours.

Prof. Jennifer Hundt 

Lübecker Institute for Experimental Dermatology 

Prof. Dr. Jennifer Hundt leads pioneering research on the visualization of cutaneous inflammation at Universität zu Lübeck. Her work bridges experimental dermatology and advanced in vivo imaging, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and mentoring PhD candidates exploring skin immunology, inflammatory mechanisms, and molecular interactions driving dermatological diseases.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Prof. Hauke Busch

Medical Systems Biology

Prof. Dr. Hauke Busch heads the Medical Systems Biology group at Universität zu Lübeck, specializing in multi-omics data integration, dynamic modelling of signalling and regulatory networks, and systems-level insights into cancer, inflammation, and dermatology. He is PI of the Sharjah-Lübeck Dual Degree programme and central to translational systems biology.

Prof. Rabih Halwani 

Immunology

Prof. Rabih Halwani is Professor of Immunology at the University of Sharjah and Director of its Research Institute of Medical & Health Sciences. His work targets chronic inflammatory diseases, asthma, primary immunodeficiency genetics, vaccine development, and novel therapeutics. He also studies COVID-19 immunogenetics and immune pathway dysregulation.

Prof. Eman Abu-Gharbieh

Pharmacology & Toxicology

Prof. Eman Abu-Gharbieh is a Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Vice Dean at the College of Medicine, University of Sharjah. She oversees graduate studies, program evaluation, and quality assurance. Dr. Marieke Höhn

Coordinator University of Lübeck 

Dr. Marieke Höhn coordinates the Lübeck Institute for Experimental Dermatology and leads the Lübeck-Sharjah Dual Degree Program. Her PhD explored epidermal detoxification under UV irradiation and diclofenac exposure. She supports exchange logistics and helps PhD candidates navigate dual-degree processes. 

Nathalie Sochurek

Coordinator Universtiy of Lübeck 

Nathalie Sochurek is a doctoral candidate at the University of Lübeck’s Institute for Medical History and Science Studies (IMGWF). Her research examines the mental health of second-generation migrants in Germany, focusing on bicultural identity and self-efficacy. She co-coordinates the Lübeck side of the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program.

Razia Sader Khail

Coordinator University of Sharjah

Razia Sader Khail is the administrative assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges at the University of Sharjah. With a background in business management, she specializes in event coordination, student support, and program development, co-coordinating the Sharjah side of the Lübeck–Sharjah Dual Degree Program.

Prof. Timo Gemoll

Translational Surgical Oncology & Biomaterial Banks

Prof. Dr. Timo Gemoll leads the Section for Translational Surgical Oncology and Biomaterial Banks at the Clinic for Surgery, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, and Universität zu Lübeck. His research focuses on identifying biomarkers for early cancer detection and prognosis through genomic, proteomic, and liquid biopsy approaches, including circulating tumour cells and autoantibodies. By integrating molecular data with clinical outcomes, his work aims to improve personalized cancer therapy and translational oncology practices. He is also actively involved in mentoring PhD candidates within the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, supporting interdisciplinary research and innovation in surgical oncology.

Dr. Yves Laumonnier

Institute for Nutritional Medicine

Dr. Yves Laumonnier is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Nutritional Medicine and heads the Allergic Asthma research group at the Centre for Infection and Inflammation Research (ZIEL), Universität zu Lübeck. His work investigates the immunological mechanisms underlying allergic asthma, particularly the roles of complement components like C3a, C5a and their receptors (C3aR, C5aR1, C5aR2) in sensitisation, airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilia, mucus overproduction, and Th2 / Th17 immune responses. Applying both in vivo and molecular‐immunological approaches, Dr. Laumonnier aims to elucidate how these pathways contribute to asthma development and exacerbation. His research bridges basic immunology and translational inflammation science.

Prof. Cyrus Khandanpour

Department of Hematology and Oncology

Prof. Dr. med. Cyrus Khandanpour is Professor of Translational Cancer Research at the University of Lübeck and Senior Physician in Hematology and Oncology at UKSH Lübeck. He leads the Khandanpour Lab within the Lübeck Integrated Oncology Network (LION) and serves on the Executive Board of the University Cancer Center Schleswig-Holstein (UCCSH). His research focuses on the role of transcription factors (Gfi1, Gfi1b) in leukemia and lymphoma, tumor–stroma interactions, and genetic and epigenetic mechanisms in cancer progression. He also investigates molecular drivers of multiple myeloma and amyloidosis, aiming to translate basic research into personalized cancer therapies.

Prof. Khuloud Bajbouj

Department of Basic Medical Sciences

Prof. Khuloud Bajbouj is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Sharjah’s College of Medicine. Her research focuses on cell biology and drug discovery, with particular expertise in cancer biology and immunology. Prof. Bajbouj mentors students in the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, guiding translational research efforts. She has contributed significantly to studies on estrogen’s role in iron metabolism and its implications for cancer treatment. Actively involved in academic collaborations, Prof. Bajbouj is recognized for advancing medical research and fostering international partnerships.


 

Prof. Christian Sina

Institute of Nutritional Medicine

Prof. Dr. med. Christian Sina is Director of the Institute of Nutritional Medicine at the University Hospital Schleswig‑Holstein, Campus Lübeck (UKSH), and holds the Fresenius Kabi Professorship in Nutritional Medicine at Universität zu Lübeck. A specialist in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, he consults at the 1st Medical Department and the Comprehensive Center for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM). His research centres on precision nutrition, the gut microbiome, inflammatory bowel disease, and clinical nutrition. He is co‑founder of Perfood GmbH, former president of the German IBD working group (DACED), and currently chairs the German Society of Mucosal Immunology & Microbiome (DGMIM).

Prof. Jutta Kirfel

Institute of Pathology

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Jutta Kirfel is Head of Molecular Pathology and the Division of Molecular Pathology at the Institute of Pathology, University Hospital Schleswig‑Holstein (UKSH) on the Lübeck campus, holding the W2‑Professorship for Pathology with a focus on molecular pathology at the University of Lübeck. Her research examines transcriptional regulation using cofactors and chromatin modifying enzymes in cancer, especially in hormonally dependent tumors and lung cancers. She leads efforts to develop and implement advanced molecular diagnostics for routine pathology using techniques such as ChIP‑seq and RNA‑seq. Kirfel is part of the Lübeck Integrated Oncology Network (LION) and the University Cancer Center Schleswig‑Holstein (UCCSH).

Prof. Wael Abdel-rahman Hassan 

Department of Molecular Pathology

Prof. Dr. Wael M. Abdel-Rahman Hassan is a Professor of Molecular Pathology at the University of Sharjah, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences. He holds a PhD in Molecular Pathology from the University of Edinburgh and has extensive experience in cancer research. His work focuses on the molecular genetics of colon and breast cancer, investigating the impact of environmental toxins, obesity, and methylation changes on tumor development. Prof. Hassan also explores familial cancer syndromes and microRNA regulation, aiming to improve therapeutic responses through personalized medicine approaches.

Prof. Raafat El-Awady

Department of Pharmacology

Prof. Dr. Raafat Abd El-Gawad El-Gharib El-Awady is a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Sharjah and serves as the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies. He leads the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Pharmacotherapeutics, focusing on pharmacogenomics, cancer therapy, and DNA repair mechanisms. His research investigates cell cycle regulation, DNA damage repair, and the development of anticancer agents. Prof. El-Awady holds a PhD in Pharmacology from Hamburg University and has extensive experience in individualized medicine and epigenetic responses to chemotherapy. He is also a key member of the Lübeck-Sharjah Dual Degree Program steering committee.


 

Dr. Ralph Pries

Department of Otorhinolaryngology

Dr. Ralph Pries heads the research group Immunalteration of Malignant and Benign Inflammation within the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology. His work investigates how inflammation associated with head and neck cancers (e.g. head and neck squamous cell carcinoma) and chronic benign inflammatory diseases like rhinosinusitis alters immune cell function. He studies the regulation of various immune cells, especially monocyte subsets and macrophages, under pathological inflammatory conditions, and explores imaging techniques to visualise these changes at the single-cell level. As part of the Sharjah-Lübeck Dual Degree Program, he mentors PhD students and contributes to translational inflammation research bridging molecular immunology and clinical applications.

Prof. Jens Marquardt

Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology

Prof. Dr. Jens U. Marquardt is Professor of Medicine and Director of Medical Clinic I for Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck. His clinical and research focus lies in hepatology, gastrointestinal oncology, and the molecular mechanisms underlying chronic liver disease and cancer development. His work aims to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets to improve patient outcomes. As a mentor within the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, he promotes translational research and supports PhD candidates in developing innovative approaches that bridge molecular science and clinical application in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Prof. Olaf Jöhren

Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

Prof. Olaf Jöhren is a group leader at the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Lübeck. His research focuses on brain pathways regulating food intake, obesity, and diabetes, with special emphasis on orexin receptor signaling and astrocyte energy metabolism. He studies orexin receptor splice variants, their regulation, and the role of hypoxia-inducible factors in astrocytes. Prof. Jöhren’s work advances understanding of molecular mechanisms controlling brain energy balance. As a mentor in the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, he supports interdisciplinary research fostering collaboration and innovation in neuropharmacology and metabolism.

Prof. Sven Perner

Institute of Pathology

Prof. Dr. med. Sven Perner is Director of the Institute of Pathology at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, and the Pathology Department at the Leibniz Research Center Borstel. He specializes in uropathology, thoracic pathology, and molecular pathology. His research focuses on the molecular pathogenesis and genetics of solid tumors, with a particular emphasis on prostate cancer. Prof. Perner has been recognized as a Fellow of The Royal College of Pathologists. He is also the host of the podcast "Patho aufs Ohr," where he discusses pathological findings and their implications.


 

Prof. Rifat Akram Hamoudi

Department of Clinical Sciences

Prof. Rifat Akram Hamoudi is Professor of Molecular and Cellular Pathology in the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Sharjah. His research spans computational medicine, bioinformatics, oncology, and pathology, with special emphasis on modelling nonlinear processes, molecular and cellular immunology, haematology, and personalised medicine. He integrates mathematical modelling with experimental and clinical data to explore disease mechanisms and tailor therapeutic approaches. A key figure in the Sharjah-Lübeck Dual Degree Program, he serves on the Joint Steering Committee and mentors PhD candidates, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across computational and molecular pathology.

Dr. Hany Omar

Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacotherapeutics

Prof. Hany A. Omar is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacotherapeutics at the College of Pharmacy, University of Sharjah. His research focuses on molecular pharmacology, anticancer drug mechanisms, and overcoming drug resistance through novel therapeutic approaches. He also investigates oxidative stress, antioxidant activity, and autophagy modulation in cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Through his work, he aims to bridge basic pharmacological research with clinical applications, improving treatment outcomes. He actively mentors PhD candidates and contributes to international collaborations within the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, fostering innovation in translational pharmacology and therapeutics.

Prof. Taleb Al-Tal

Department of Medicinal Chemistry

Prof. Taleb Hasan Al-Tal is a Professor of Organic Medicinal Chemistry and leads the charge in drug design and discovery at the University of Sharjah. As Director of the Institute for Medical & Health Sciences Research, he champions interdisciplinary efforts in medicinal chemistry, natural products, and biologically inspired small-molecule development. His work bridges chemistry and biology, focusing on privileged scaffolds, diversity-oriented synthesis, and therapeutic innovation. Within the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, he contributes strategic mentorship and fosters translational research collaborations to advance drug discovery and molecular medicine.

Prof. Iman M. Talaat

Department of Clinical Sciences

Prof. Iman M. Talaat is Professor of Pathology in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the College of Medicine, University of Sharjah. She is also a Consultant Histopathologist with extensive experience in diagnostic and molecular pathology. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis, particularly in breast, colorectal, prostate, and renal cancers. She applies advanced histopathological techniques including immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization to explore cancer biomarkers and therapeutic targets. As a mentor within the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, she supports interdisciplinary research and the integration of molecular pathology into translational cancer studies and clinical practice.


 

Prof. Riyad Bendardaf

Department of Clinical Sciences

Prof. Riyad Bendardaf is a Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at University Hospital Sharjah (UHS) and a Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the College of Medicine, University of Sharjah. He holds a PhD in Oncology and Radiotherapy from the University of Turku, Finland, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh). His clinical expertise encompasses breast, colorectal, head and neck, lung, urogenital, and gynecological cancers. Prof. Bendardaf actively contributes to international oncology research and serves on editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals. He is also a mentor in the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program.

Prof. Jibran Sualeh Muhammad

Department of Basic Medical Sciences

Prof. Jibran Sualeh Muhammad is an Associate Professor in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Sharjah's College of Medicine. He holds a Ph.D. in Medical Life Sciences from the University of Toyama, Japan, and an MBChB from the University of Karachi, Pakistan. Dr. Muhammad leads the Iron Biology Research Group at the Sharjah Institute for Medical and Health Research. His research focuses on epigenetic regulation in cancer biology, particularly in liver and colon cancers, exploring how iron metabolism influences tumor progression and chemoresistance. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and has received multiple international awards, including the King Hussein Cancer Foundation's Promising Researcher Award. Dr. Muhammad is also a mentor in the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program, guiding students in translational cancer research.

Prof. Bashair Mussa

Department of Pharmacology and Neurophysiology

Prof. Bashair Mohammed Mussa is an Associate Professor of Neurophysiology and Pharmacology at the University of Sharjah’s College of Medicine. She earned her PhD from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research focuses on central pathways regulating insulin secretion and the pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy. Prof. Mussa serves as Head of the Global Engagement Department and Acting Head of Global Mobility at the University’s Office of International Relations. She is also Deputy Director of the UOS Diabetes Center and Coordinator of the MSc in Diabetes Management. She has received multiple awards recognizing her leadership and contributions to science and the community.

Prof. Mawieh Hamad

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences

Prof. Mawieh Hamad is a Professor of Molecular Immunology at the University of Sharjah's Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences. He leads the Iron Biology Group at the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research. His research focuses on the hormonal regulation of iron metabolism in cancer and immunity, particularly the role of estrogen in modulating intracellular iron levels and its implications for breast and ovarian cancer cells. His work has shown that estrogen-induced iron depletion enhances the susceptibility of cancer cells to chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. Prof. Hamad is also a mentor in the Sharjah–Lübeck Dual Degree Program.
