On Friday, March 26, 2021, the first Scientific Retreat of the Lübeck-Sharjah Dual Degree Program took place. Prof. Gabriele Gillessen-Kaesbach, President of the University of Lübeck, Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of College of Medicine, and Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, welcomed all participants. As guest speaker, Prof. Mohamed Sayegh gave a lecture on "Collaborative Research: Path to Success", Prof. Malte Spielmann spoke on "The dark side of the genome: non-coding mutations and disease". PIs also presented their research, such as Prof. Rifat Hamoudi "The role of immune microenvironment in HER2 overexpressing breast cancer", Prof. Rabih Halwani "Novel therapeutic approaches for steroid resistant Chronic Respiratory Diseases: repurposing Abatacept", Dr. Hany Omar "Novel Agents Targeting Cancer Cell Metabolic and Survival Pathways" and Dr. Ralf Pries "Distribution of circulating monocyte subsets with regard to inflammation".
All PhD students of the Lübeck-Sharjah Dual Degree Program also presented their research results and made this successful retreat perfect with their interesting presentations.
